This Day That Age
The Government of India has sanctioned grants to a number of State Governments for implementation of schemes for water supply in rural and urban areas during 1957-58 under the national water supply and sanitation scheme of the Ministry of Health. According to an official press release, the following are the grants made for rural water supply schemes: Andhra Pradesh Rs.3,50,000, Kerala Rs.2,60,854, Mysore Rs.5,30,380, Madhya Pradesh Rs.15,76,963 and West Bengal Rs.81,787 towards the cost of equipment and materials supplied to them. The Government of India has sanctioned a loan of Rs.27 lakhs to the Madras Government for implementation of their spill-over water supply and sanitation schemes for urban areas. For implementation of the water supply scheme of the Trivandrum Corporation, a loan of Rs. 5 lakhs has been sanctioned to the Kerala Government. The national water supply and sanitation programme was started in 1954 in the First Five-Year Plan.
