Sixth Pay Commission

That the defence forces are a neglected lot has been amply proved by the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission. It has only succeeded in widening the already existing disparities in the pay between them and the civil services.

At a time when the nation is faced with an acute shortage of quality officers, incentives in the form of steep hikes in salaries could have worked wonders. The reluctance of the younger generation to join the forces could well be attributed to financial considerations.

As has been suggested, and persistently demanded in certain quarters, it would be wise to constitute a defence pay commission.

Pachu Menon,
Margao
