SGPC objects to auctioning of relic

Amritsar: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has sought Government’s intervention for preventing a piece of body armour believed to be that of the tenth Sikh Guru Gobind Singh from going under the hammer at Sotheby’s auction house in London next month.

In a letter to Prime Minister Monmohan Singh, SGPC President Avtar Singh Makkar said the body wanted time for Sikh experts to establish the “authenticity” of the steel armour.

Copies of the letter which were distributed to the media here today, said “we urge the Government of India to intervene to have this auction postponed until the authenticity of this armour is confirmed by Sikh experts”.

It said the matter was “highly sensitive” as it involved Sikh religious sentiment.

The auction, believed to be the first where the relic of a Sikh guru is put on sale, is due at a famous London department store on April 9.

The Sikhs already have an issue with the erstwhile British Raj as the famed Kohinoor diamond, which once belonged to Maharaja Ranjit Singh, had been taken away from the country. --PTI
