Andhra Pradesh
Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) authorities, of late, are trenching over some RCC roads in the city, which were laid only a few years ago, to provide drainage facility to the public. Of course, people need not dispute over such decisions. But, on completion of the work, VMC authorities are requested to relay all the roads wherever the facility is provided. It would give some relief to the road-users. Pathabhi Vijayawada Airport expansionDespite the claim of the Krishna district administration that greater emphasis is being laid on infrastructure development to promote industrial growth in the district, the master plan for expansion of Gannavaram airport is yet to take off. As part of the master plan, it was proposed to expand the 1,745-metre runway by 663 metres to facilitate landing of bigger aircraft. The development of Gannavaram airport assumes significance in the wake of expansion plans of IT companies to II-tier cities like Vijayawada. The government should take a serious view of these facts and take measures to expand the runway. Ch. Balaji Vijayawada Farmers’ interests paramountThe Krishna Zilla Parishad general body has resolved to release water to Krishna canals till April 10 instead of March 31. The irrigation officials did not agree to release water till April 15 though the MLAs from the district suggested it. The irrigation officials plead that it would hamper the delta modernisation works. All said and done, the irrigation officials should consider the suggestion from the MLAs in view of the farmers’ interests. The farmers who go for rabi crop would benefit a lot in the case of release of water till April 15. M. Anjaneya Chowdhary Machilipatnam Chilli farmers need helpUntimely rains for more than four days caused a heavy loss to chilli farmers in Guntur and Krishna districts. Chilli crop was raised in 1.6 lakh acres in the region, and about 50 per cent of the crop was left in the fields after the harvest got soaked following heavy rains. Chilli brought to the Guntur market yard was also badly damaged due to rains. The government has not announced any plans to rescue the farmers who incurred heavy losses. The government should announce a package to chilli farmers. V. Pratap Guntur Tourist spot left untappedMany people were not aware of the significance of Bandar Fort built by the Dutch centuries ago until the Krishna District Writers’ Association organised a two-day national seminar on comprehensive history of Krishna district at the fort. Many MLAs from the district are also unaware of the existence of such a fort in the district. Neither the State government nor the Archaeological Survey of India have given publicity about the fort. The Tourism Department should take note of this and include the fort in the list of tourist places of the district. A. Satyavathi Machilipatnam
