Low-lying areas inundated, tress fall in heavy rain

RAIN HAVOC: A tree fell on Sarjapur Road in Bangalore following heavy rain on Sunday.

Bangalore: Houses in low-lying areas were inundated and trees came crashing to the ground in several areas here on Sunday following heavy rain even as hailstones lashed some areas in Bangalore South.

Traffic movement was also affected for over an hour in the afternoon following water logging and tree falls.

Heavy rain in the areas around Jayanagar and Banashankari resulted in inundation of several houses in low-lying, areas including Hosakerehalli and Ittamadu, all in Banashankari 3rd Stage, while trees came crashing to the ground in other areas.

It is learnt that the compound wall of a residence collapsed in Ittamadu.

Trees fell near Sanjaynagar 80-ft Road, Ashoknagar BDA Complex, Koramangala BDA Complex, Sarjapur Road, Jain Temple in Jayanagar 4th Block, Koramangala 5th Block, Jayanagar 3rd Block, Madiwala, Manjunathnagar in Ittamadu and other areas, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Control Room has reported.

While heavy rain was reported in some areas in the city, moderate rain was recorded in several areas. Branches of trees fell on the road on Hosur Road near Christ College in Koramangala affecting the movement of traffic. Water logging was also reported in front of a private mall stalling many vehicles, which slowed down traffic on the road, according to eyewitnesses.

The movement of vehicles, it is learnt, was affected for nearly an hour.

A large number of motorists also faced a harrowing time wading through stagnant pools of water on Hosur Road. Hailstones were reported in Koramangala, BTM Layout and other adjoining areas.

The weather was partially cloudy throughout the day, while there was intermittent rainfall in several areas, the Meteorology Department officials said.

Meanwhile, the officials said that the HAL Airport received 6.44 mm rainfall while the city recorded 1.3 mm rainfall. Yelahanka did not receive any rainfall on Sunday. Humidity was recorded at 79 per cent.

While the maximum temperature was recorded at 30.8 degrees Celsius, the minimum temperature was at 21.4 degrees Celsius.

The Meteorology Department officials said that the city could witness rain or thundershowers on Monday. The weather will be partially cloudy.
