BWSSB water supply in more zones

Swathi Shivanand

From Tuesday, the board will take up maintenance of borewells

Dasarahalli, Byatarayanapura included under maintenance

The water board expects to incur Rs. 1.5 crore monthly towards this in five zones

BANGALORE: More than a year after its jurisdiction was increased from 225 sq km to about 800 sq km with the formation of Greater Bangalore, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) will take over drinking water supply in two new zones.

“From April 1, we will take up maintenance of borewells and supply water from the borewells to houses in Dasarahalli and Byatarayanapura zones,” BWSSB Chairperson G. Latha Krishna Rao told The Hindu.

Earlier, the erstwhile city municipal councils were responsible for drilling borewells and supplying water to residents in these areas.

When Greater Bangalore was formed, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) took over the responsibilities of water supply.

The palike, in turn, handed over the maintenance to private operators through contracts, some of which were awarded as recently as August 2007.

“The BBMP is looking at possibilities of terminating the contracts in these areas. But once these legal formalities are completed and power bills are paid, we will take up operations in these zones also,” Ms. Rao said and added that in Dasarahalli and Byatrayanapura, there were no legal complications.

High cost

The water board expects to incur Rs. 1.5 crore monthly towards maintenance and about Rs. 2.5 crore towards energy charges in all the five new zones.

The money will have to be generated from the revenue earned through water supply. “The residents will have to bear the energy and maintenance costs as we have no other fund source,” said Ms. Rao.
