Experts allay fears about Brahmapuram Plant

Staff Reporter

Plant will be ready for trial run next week

Construction and expansion joints mistaken for cracks

Officials dispel fear about possibility of leachet run off

KOCHI: The solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram would be ready for trial run by April 3.

The assurance comes from the officials of the Fact Engineering and Design Organisation (FEDO), which is the consultant of the city Corporation for the plant.

The assurance comes at a time when apprehensions have been raised about the delay in the commissioning of the plant. There were also reports that cracks had developed on the floor of the plant and the concrete floor had caved in at a few places.

The joints that were left in the concrete floor for the concrete to expand were mistaken for cracks. These joints would be filled up with material such as bitumen for avoiding the formation of cracks. Then there were the construction joints in the floor, which were made while concreting large areas. The construction joints and expansion joints were mistaken for cracks. Rectification works have also been carried out in necessary areas, officials said.

While admitting that the concrete floor has caved in at some points, the official pointed out that the issue was brought to the notice of the Corporation officials earlier. The floor caved in near the vermi compost plant. The caving in of the floor can be avoided only if the land filling is completed at the area. There is a 25-meter stretch between the concrete floor of the plant and the boundary that needs to be filled.

The officials also dispelled fears expressed by some quarters that there was the possibility of the leachet from the plant mixing up with the river water.
