STILL ENTHUSIASTIC: Senior citizens and members of Malleswaram Senior Citizens Forum at the Malleswaram grounds in Bangalore on Sunday.

BANGALORE: The playground on Malleswaram 5th Cross has been host to many annual sports events. But Sunday morning saw an unusual set of competitions being held for those who have left their sporting days far behind.

At the walking competitions held by the Malleswaram Senior Citizens Forum for the aged, some worked their ageing limbs briskly and some decidedly more slowly; but all were uniformly cheered on by enthusiastic volunteers.

Three sets of contests were held — for those aged between 60 and 75, 76 and 80 and those aged above 80.

The senior citizens forum decided to celebrate March 30 as Senior Citizens Day and nearly 100 members spent the entire day partying in their own fashion. After the walking contests, they marched in a procession up to the auditorium where the prizes were handed over, some humour programmes held and two of their more senior counterparts were felicitated. Ninety-two-year-old K. Thimmapayya, who served in the Indian Army in Burma during the Second World War and was the president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association for several years, and 74-year-old Saraswathi Narayan Nayak, a social worker, were presented with mementos on the occasion.
