Kochi: ‘Kallil Kothiya Kanavukal’ is a dream come true for all at Government Higher Secondary School, Kallil, in Ernakulam district. Teachers and students want to name it a ‘digital visual souvenir with a difference.’ “Yes, we wanted to do something different,” says Payipra Radhakrishnan, schoolteacher and former secretary of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, recalling the beginning of the creative journey. “The financial constraints that we have to face in coming out with a printed work also encouraged us to think differently,” he says. The idea came after several brainstorming sessions. Mr. Radhakrishnan says the digital route cost them nearly Rs.15,000. “But it (the cost) was cheaper when compared to the printing cost and the effort that we would have to put in to get advertisements,” he says. A village with a rich heritage and dotted with greenery, Kallil has been a treat for those who worked behind the camera on the project. “The place is also famous for being the setting for Viruthan Sanku, the first detective novel in Malayalam,” Mr. Radhakrishnan says. The one-hour digital souvenir maps the activities on the campus and provides a platform for students (who won prizes in youth festivals) to showcase their talents. The various memories of school life are woven into the narrative.
