Women’s reading: A scene from the play based on O.V. Vijayan’s ‘Khazakkinte Ithihasam’ at Mananchira in Kozhikode. Few other novels have mesmerised the Malayali reader the way O.V. Vijayan’s masterpiece ‘Khazakkinte Ithihasam’ has. It continues to find new readers four decades after it was published. Little wonder then that there was a good crowd on Sunday night at the open-air stage at Mananchira Square, Kozhikode, to see a 45-mintue play based on ‘Khasakkinte Ithihasam.’ “What I tried to do was to read the novel from a female point of view,” says P.C. Hareesh who wrote and directed the play. “It was Jisha who said that we could look at the play from a woman’s angle.” Jisha also did most of acting in the play, portraying the prominent female characters of the novel. Through Padma’s eyes“We were looking at Khasak through the eyes of Padma, rather than those of Ravi. Padma also represents those who have criticised ‘Khasakinte Ithihasam.’ Yes, I have taken a few liberties with the original novel, but one has to do it while giving a visual interpretation of a novel like ‘Khasakinte Ithihasam,’” says Harish. P. K. Ajith Kumar
