Municipality writes off water and property taxes

Staff Reporter

Aranthangi council adopts a resolution expressing its approval

ARANTHANGI: The Aranthangi Municipality has written off property tax and water tax totalling Rs.11. 16-lakh outstanding in the demand notices for the past several years.

The council, at its meeting held here on Monday, adopted a resolution expressing its approval for writing-off the dues.

The Chairman of the council, P. Mariappan, who presided over the meeting, said that a decision to this effect was taken as the dues were found repeatedly appearing in the demand notices. He also clarified that the process did not mean any waiver, but updating the exact amount of outstanding dues.

Re-entries in the outstanding dues in the property tax demand notices, omissions in updating the details of remittances particularly after the computerisation of property tax, re-entries in dues for disconnected pipeline connections had resulted in the overdues.

While Rs. 5.07 lakhs had been written off in the property tax demand, the balance Rs.6.09 lakhs pertained to the demand from the water-tax.

When a few councillors pleaded for augmenting the supply of drinking water, the Chairman replied that the council had urged the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board to include the construction of an over-head tank of Five lakh litre capacity under the Combined Drinking Water supply scheme to benefit six wards in the town.

The council also adopted a resolution hiking the monthly tariff for the commercial establishments such as marriage halls, cinema-halls and other community centres from Rs. 200 to Rs.1,250.
