Central team for Gadag soon to assess rain loss

Rs. 50 crore released to State for relief work

Officials told to focus on problems of affected people


GADAG: Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajasekharan has said that a Central team will soon visit Gadag district to assess the loss owing to the recent rain.

He was addressing presspersons at Kallapur village in Nargund taluk on Sunday after visiting several affected villages.

Mr. Rajasekharan said that he had spoken to Home Minister Shivraj Patil about the loss and requested him to take steps to provide assistance at the earliest. Based on a report submitted by the Governor and discussions he had with the Chief Secretary, he had appealed to the Centre to provide early assistance.

He said there was no dearth of funds for immediate relief measures and Rs. 50 crore had been released for various districts in the State. Officials had been directed to focus on providing food and healthcare to farmers and fodder to cattle.

He said the Union Government had set up Disaster Management Authority at the national, State, district and taluk levels through which officials were being trained in disaster management. In Tamil Nadu and Kerala, respective State governments were disbursing Central compensation after adding their share to it. He had brought the matter to the notice of Governor Rameshwar Thakur, he added.

Earlier, the Union Minister visited Somapur, Madagunaki, Hadli, Shirol, Konnur, Kappali, Gangapur and other villages in Nargund taluk where cotton, wheat, jowar, maize, sunflower crops had been destroyed in the rain. He also visited some places where houses had been damaged.

Mr. Rajasekharan addressed a meeting chaired by the president of the Hadli Gram Panchayat, R.C. Parvatagoudar, at Hadli village.

He said Gadag was one among the 20 districts in the State which had been selected for the special agricultural package of the Union Government.

The former MLAs C.C. Patil and S.S. Patil urged the Minister to direct the officials concerned to take steps for providing immediate assistance to the affected people.

Meeting

Mr. Rajasekharan also held a meeting to review the relief measures taken up in the district. He told the officials to respond immediately to the problems of the affected people.

Pralhad Joshi, MP, underscored the need for providing a special relief package. In-Charge Deputy Commissioner P. Balasubramanyam and Assistant Commissioner G.L. Praveenkumar provided information on the damage caused and relief measures undertaken in the district.
