NAMAKKAL: Collector G. Sundaramurthi directed the agriculture department officials to create awareness among farmers on short term crops, including maize which would give better yield and help augment their income. Participating at a conference for maize farmers here recently, the Collector said that the demand for maize in the country had increased several folds. A large number of poultry farms in the country were utilising maize for feed. Poultry farms in Namakkal district alone required over 30,000 tonnes of feed a month. Cultivation of maize would be a profitable, he pointed out. Agriculture department officials should contact farmers in person and explain about the best technologies adopted for the cultivation of short term crops, he said. The Collector also appealed to the farmers to improve their knowledge of commodity markets. Joint Director of Agriculture Harirajakrishnan, agricultural scientists and senior officials were present in the conference. Later, chairing the district-level monitoring committee of welfare boards for unorganised sector labourers, the Collector stressed that officials should verify the applications seeking assistance under various schemes carefully. The Government had prescribed new norms for selecting beneficiaries and distributing assistance through various welfare boards and schemes, he said. District Revenue Officer G.
