Head Post Office

The Head Post Office in Tuticorin is functioning at the eastern end of the town near Beach Road. Shortly, it is going to be shifted near Kamaraj College which is the furthest point in the south. People in any part of the town have to travel a long distance to reach the Head Post Office in the present and future locations. The speed posts, booked only at the Head Post Office, are expected to meet the challenges posed by private courier services. Why cannot this function be allowed at all post offices as in the case of registered posts? Three post-boxes have been put up at the Head Post Office showing one for “local”, another for “Chennai” and the third one for “other states and foreign countries”. A box for other places in Tamil Nadu are conspicuously absent in any of the boxes. This is misleading.

Telegraph service

The Postal department has stopped telegraph services in rural post offices. It has handed over the service to franchisees on commission basis. Though it is true that nowadays the usage of telegraph facility has drastically come down, even now there are people and government officials utilising the service. The problem with the privatisation of the service is that the franchisee’s address is not known to the public. Even if we locate the franchisee, it is left to the franchisee to provide the service. It was a bitter experience for me in Pottalpudur when I could not send a telegram as the person concerned was not available that day. There was no other alternative as there was only one franchisee in that area. Recently I came to know that phonograph facility is available for booking telegrams, for those who have a phone connection of their own. I request it would be better that the authorities provide information of the franchisee or other alternative ways in post offices which don’t extend telegraph services.

Bus stop

There is a major junction on the Tuticorin-Tiruchendur national highway on the outskirts of Tuticorin. One road leads to Tuticorin harbour. Most port workers wait for buses at the junction. But buses do not stop here, putting them to inconvenience. Therefore, I request the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to establish a bus stop at the junction and ensure that buses stop here.

Maintain park

C. P. Ramaswamy Iyer Municipal Park, hitherto leased to a private party, is now under the care of Nagercoil Municipality. Now entry is free. Earlier, the lease-holder kept not only avians but also variety of dogs and fish. A children’s park was also maintained. Now skeletal staff is employed to look after the park. The main gate is almost closed with space barely sufficient for a person. All entrants are asked to write their names, addresses and sign. Vehicles are charged Rs.5 for parking. The space available at the left side of the spacious park may be utilised and municipal revenue accumulated daily.

The road connecting Anna Bus Stand from the Park side may be closed as it is gathered that pickpockets and antisocial elements are roaming there.
