Bureaucrats and policemen called upon to ensure that the rights of all individuals were respected No atrocities be committed on the weak and the marginalised people
DEHRA DUN: The Uttarakhand Government would initiate steps to set up a State Human Rights Commission to ensure that no one becomes a victim of injustice.
Announcing this at a workshop on Marginalised Communities in India organised by the Rural Litigation and Entitlement Kendra ( RLEK) here, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Prakash Pant, agreed with other speakers that the Commission should have been formed immediately after the State was born.
Justice Rajesh Tandon of the Uttarakhand High Court hoped the Government would constitute the Commission before the writ petition on the issue came up for hearing.
He called upon bureaucrats and policemen to ensure that the human rights of all individuals were respected and no atrocities were committed on the weak and marginalised people.
Avdhash Kaushal, chairperson of RLEK hoped that the Government would not hesitate in constituting the State Human Rights Commission as it would only help in better governance through checks on custodial deaths and torture by police and other investigating agencies.
Voice to the people
The Commission when operational would give a voice to the most marginalized sections, he said.
