‘UDF causing trouble in Kuttanad’

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Cooperation and Devaswoms G. Sudhakaran said here on Monday that some UDF men were hindering harvesting of paddy fields in Kuttanad using harvesting machines.

The Minister warned in a statement here that the government would take legal action unless the UDF men withdrew from Kuttanad.

The UDF should end its violent interventions. Otherwise, the government had a responsibility to protect officials who aided the farmers and workers in using harvesting machines.

Mr. Sudhakaran said that a meeting of conveners of polder committees, convened by the Collector on Sunday, was disrupted by some people as part of a planned agenda.

This happened when the government was successful in solving the problems of the farmers hit by rain in a transparent manner.

The objective of the UDF was to turn the people against the LDF and prevent them from getting the benefits announced by the government.

He said that farmers should note that the government had acted swiftly when large-scale destruction of crops occurred in Kuttanad. However, the UDF was trying to provoke officials and dissuade them from carrying out measures announced by the government.

Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy and KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala were deceiving the people in alliance with the BJP.

Recalling that he had discussed the issues in Kuttanad with Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran and Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, Mr. Sudhakaran said that the Chief Minister had promised steps to bring more harvesting machines to Kuttanad.
