No change in second class suburban fares Six per cent discount in sleeper classes THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: New passenger fares, as announced by Union Minister for Railways Lalu Prasad, in the Union Railway Budget 2008-2009 will come into effect from Tuesday. Reduction in the basic fares in trains like Shatabdi, Jan Shatabdi, Garib Rath, Rajdhani Express (peak and lean season) and season tickets will also come into effect. A discount of Re.1 will be given for basic fare up to Rs.50 in the second class Non-Suburban Mail, express trains including superfast and ordinary passenger trains. For fares beyond Rs.50 per passenger, the discount will be five per cent. There will be no change in the second class suburban fares, according to Railways. In the case of AC first class in popular trains, a reduction of 3.5 per cent in fares for all seasons will come into effect from April 1. For non-popular trains, the fare reduction will be four per cent during lean season and two per cent during peak season. The Railways will notify popular trains separately from time to time. Discounts have been announced in the fares for high capacity coaches also. In the sleeper class (81 berths), a six per cent discount had been announced for peak season, lean season and all seasons for popular and non-popular trains. In the case of AC Chair Car (102 seats) and AC 3-Tier (72 berths), the fare discount for popular trains in all seasons will be five per cent. In non-popular trains, the discount will be five per cent in peak season and 10 per cent during the non-peak season. Peak and lean seasonAccording to the Railways, the peak season will be from April 1 to July 31 and from September 1 to January 31. The lean season will be from February 1 to March 31 and from August 1 to 31. In the case of tickets already purchased at pre-revised rates, refund of difference in fares will be provided as per rules.
