BANGALORE: It was an anxious lot of students who appeared for the Mathematics paper of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination which commenced here on Monday amid rumours of a question paper leak. The tension was evident as students gathered at their respective test centres, with most of them doing some last-minute cramming and others seeking support from parents and friends. As they walked out of the exam hall three hours later, most of them said that the exam was “moderate” and the questions as expected. Speaking to The Hindu, D.S. Rajanna, Director of the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB), dismissed all rumours regarding any question paper leak and appealed to students not to pay any attention. “I was called and told there had been a leak at 12.30 p.m., but there was no evidence and it was baseless. The exam has gone off smoothly,” he added. As many as 8.44 lakh students took the exam in 2,645 centres across the State, out of which 13 were booked for malpractices and one student in Raichur was caught for impersonation. While five students were debarred in Bijapur, three were caught in Bellary and Chikballapur. One student each was caught in Belgaum and Gulbarga. Krishna Chaitanya and Swathi R., students of Sudarshan Vidyamandir said that the question paper was easy. “The paper had many application-based and concept-based questions. Some questions were tricky. It tested our thinking abilities and it was challenging. If someone was thorough with the subject, he would have found the question paper easy,” said Krishna. Swathi said she liked the format of the question paper and she was confident scoring 95 marks. “I may lose some marks because in a couple of questions, I did the steps correctly but wrote the wrong answer,” she said. The SSLC exams are as much a testing time for parents who look forward to this all-important first step. Swathi’s father Ramamurthy C.S., said, “Swathi is a responsible and self-motivated child and we never pressured her to study. We expect that she will do well in exams.” Principal of Sudarshan Vidyamandir Hemaa Narayan said that she had an interaction with the students as well as teachers and all of them were happy with the paper. Shubha Madan, principal of Auden High School, said, “We conducted three preparatory tests for our students.”
