Hearing impaired students making last-minute preparations for the SSLC exam in Bangalore on Monday. BANGALORE: While the average age of students writing the SSLC exam is 15, here is a 36-year-old couple who appeared for the examination at St. Rock’s Girls High School at Fraser Town, here on Monday. Pawan Kumar and his wife Laxmi are both hearing impaired and were not able to clear the exam when they had taken it at a younger age. “In fact, we wanted to write the exam last year, but could not due to an accident at home. According to the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board, 2,860 candidates taking the exam this year are differently abled. As many as 34 hearing impaired students of different age groups from the Swayamwara Trust and 11 from Shata Shrunga Residential School for Deaf Children took the exam at St. Rock’s Girls High School. These students are being taught and trained at the Swayamwara Trust, which had 16 out of 18 students passing the SSLC examinations last year. C.N. Vijayaraj of the Swayamwara Trust said that last year there were four couples and that the institute caters to the hearing impaired. “Other schools do not give them a second chance. We train them and give them special attention to make sure they can overcome the odds,” he explained
