ANGRY: A woman councillor raising a demand at the council meeting in Tuticorin on Monday. — Tuticorin: Heated exchanges between All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillors followed by a walkout by AIADMK men marked the proceedings at the municipal council meeting held here on Monday. Commotion started when 11 AIADMK councillors, led by N. Suresh Kumar, protested the “refusal” of Municipal Chairperson Kasturi Thangam to discuss various matters mentioned in the resolution taken up for discussion. According to them, the Chairperson was repeatedly disallowing the opposition from airing their views. They also staunchly opposed the administration’s move to write-off “irrecoverable” property tax to the tune of Rs. 28.54 lakh pending from fiscal 1964-65 to 1992-93 which they termed as “against the law”. Tension prevailed again for a while after AIADMK councillors boycotted the proceedings when Kamatchi Gopal, a Congress councillor, protested the “step-motherly” attitude shown to her ward (number 6) during the recent rain. She claimed that, despite repeated requests from the public, there was no concerted effort from the authorities to drain the water which entered many low-lying areas. The council decided to postpone the discussion to finalise the ‘basic value’ for the ‘general revision’ of property tax.
