Train service likely to begin on the new line by May-end TIRUVARUR/NAGAPATTINAM: A trial run was conducted by Southern Railway on the newly laid broad gauge line between Tiruvarur and Nagore on Saturday. Railway officials said the train service was likely to begin on the new track by May-end. Gauge conversion work, at a cost of Rs.45 crore, is on in the 30-km stretch between Tiruvarur and Nagore for the last 14 months. Crossing stations have been set up at Keelvelur, Sikkal and Nagapattinam. There are six railway stations in the stretch. There are two big bridges and 88 small bridges. An engine was put on trial run on the broad gauge section to ascertain stability of the track. The trial engine began its journey from Tiruvarur and the track was tested at various speed levels. Engineers from Southern Railway, Tiruchi Division, led by Deputy Chief Engineer Nirala, inspected the works and expressed satisfaction with the stability of the track. According to an engineer, after ascertaining the safety and other aspects a report would be submitted to the railways for starting regular train services on the section, which was possible in two months. The broad gauge conversion work was taken up in January last and two major bridges and a number of small culverts were built. There are eight stations between Tiruvarur and Nagore at Adiyakkamangalam, Koothur, Kilvelur, Sikkal, Andanapettai, Nagapattinam, Nagapattinam Beach and Velipalayam. Council’s demandThe Consumers’ Council in Nagapattinam has urged Southern Railway to take immediate steps for running regular train services between Nagore and Tiruchi as a large number passengers incurred heavy expenditure by commuting through buses for about one and half years.
