BANGALORE: The Lok Jagaran Manch of Assam has urged the Union Government to send back the illegal migrants from Bangladesh. Addressing presspersons here on Monday, manch spokesperson Suresh Saikia feared that local people in Assam would become a minority shortly due to large scale influx of illegal migrants from Bangladesh. He said the Muslim population in Assam had grown from 5 per cent in 1871 to 34 per cent in 2007. Already Dhubri, Goalpara, Nagaon, Barpeta, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Morigaon had become Muslim-dominated districts and other districts were also following the same trend in population growth. He said there were 2.8 crore Bangladeshis living in India and they should be sent back. The Government should identify the infiltrators and delete their names from the voters’ list.
