Corrections and clarifications

  • The tenth paragraph in a report “Two share Abel prize for group theory in algebra” (March 30, 2008) was “Dr. Tits was born on near Brussels, Belgium. He was admitted to the Free University of Brussels at age 14, and received his doctorate at the age of 20.” Jacques Tits was born in Uccle, in the southern outskirts of Brussels, Belgium, on August 12, 1930.

  • In an article “Bigotry in the land of freedom” (Editorial page, March 28, 2008), the sixteenth paragraph referred to Barack Obama as the Iowa Senator. Obama is the Senator from Illinois.

  • The heading of a report (Tamil Nadu, March 29, 2008, page 8) was “Final poll roll will be released on August 31: CEO”, while the first paragraph was “The final electoral roll of Assembly constituencies after delimitation will be released on August 31, according to Chief Election Commissioner (CEO) N. Gopalaswami.” It should have been CEC.

  • In a report “‘No need to be scared of [n-]deal [:Rahul Gandhi]’” (March 27, 2008), Oscar Fernandes was mentioned to be the Union Minister for Labour and Employment. He is the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Labour and Employment.

  • In a report “Dravid joins exclusive club” (March 30, 2008, Page 1), a sentence in the second paragraph was “In 119 Tests and an innings, Dravid has 10031 runs at an impressive average of 55.41.” There was a query on what “119 Tests and an innings” meant. Rahul Dravid was playing his 120th Test in Chennai. The correspondent did not want to say 10031 runs in 120 Tests because there was the possibility of Dravid adding to that tally in the second innings.

  • In a report “Superstars enters semifinals” (“Sport”, March 28, 2008), the partnership between Russel Arnold and Hemang Badani for the fourth wicket was 112 runs, and not 120 (as published). (The report was on the match between the Chennai Superstars and the Ahmedabad Rockets on the way to the semifinals of the Indian Cricket League’s Edelweiss 20s Challenge, at Gurgaon.)

  • The Guardian in its “Corrections and Clarifications” column (March 28, 2008) says “We wrongly reported that a proposed reform of the Portuguese language could mean the letters c, p and h are removed from the alphabet. The Orthographic Accord signed by Portuguese-speaking countries seeks only to remove these letters from words where they are never pronounced, such as húmido (humid). The letters will remain in the alphabet for words where they are pronounced (‘World’s Portuguese speakers in new attempt to unify language’, page 16, March 26). In the same article we said one of the signatories to the accord is Western Timor when we meant Timor-Leste (formerly East Timor).” (The article appeared in The Hindu (Op-Ed, March 27, 2008) with the heading “Portuguese speakers seek to unify language”.)
