Real battle to begin now, say Birlas
Special Correspondent
KOLKATA: Reacting to the Supreme Court order on Monday in respect of the property dispute between the Birlas and Rajendra Singh Lodha, the Birla camp admitted that they had suffered a loss in a battle that was a mere peripheral one.
N.G. Khaitan, solicitor to the Birlas, said that the real battle will begin now.
He was addressing a press conference in the Birla House, the corporate headquarters of the group in the presence of some close aides of the Birlas. “Whether a person has a caveatable interest or not is not the main issue. It is a peripheral battle,” he said.
None of the Birla family seniors, who attend office here, was present during the meeting.
Mr. Khaitan said the main concern was over two issues.
These were the probate proceedings as a civil suit and the criminal trial initiated against R.S. Lodha.
The Lodha camp said that with this order, it is conclusively decided by three courts consecutively — the Single Judge of the Calcutta High Court, the Division Bench and now the Supreme Court — that Birlas’ challenge to Priyamvada Birla’s will is untenable.
