This Day That Age
(From an editorial) From small beginnings the Indian Air Force has grown into a modern Service of which the nation is rightly proud. To-day its Silver Jubilee is being observed. The IAF has recovered with commendable despatch from the mutilation caused by Partition and, under Air Marshal Mukherjee, its officers and other personnel have successfully undertaken tremendous tasks in times of peace and war; we have only to remember Kashmir where it was the IAF which initially helped to stop the raiders from Pakistan; and the many occasions in which this young Service has gone to the succour of our citizens who had been subjected to natural calamities. Recently the IAF went to the aid of Ceylon where large areas had been flooded. Both the President and the Prime Minister have, in their messages to mark the Silver Jubilee of the IAF, stressed the role that the Air Force has played notably in times of peace and of war. In fact, Mr. Nehru has pointed out that he would like our Defence Services to be known not only for their efficiency and daring but also for works of peace and friendship. There has been a rapid expansion and modernisation of the IAF. The formation of the Operational and Training Commands, to which the Maintenance Command was added some three years ago, has helped to rationalise the organisational structure of the IAF.
