State seeks Union Government’s intervention Kannada Chaluvali stages black flag demonstration BANGALORE: The State Government has sought the Union Government’s intervention to resolve the controversy surrounding the execution of the Hogenakkal water supply scheme by the Tamil Nadu Government. The Hogenakkal reservoir falls on the border of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Chief Secretary Sudhakar Rao told presspersons here on Monday that the State Government had written to the Union Water Resources Ministry seeking its intervention to resolve the dispute between the two States. He said the Government had written to the Tamil Nadu Government requesting it to stop all development projects at Hogenakkal till the dispute was resolved. According to Tamil Nadu, Karnataka agreed to the execution of the Hogenekkal combined water supply scheme in 1998. Karnataka gave its consent at a meeting called by the then Secretary of the Union Water Resources Ministry on June 29, 1998 in which Tamil Nadu’s representative participated. The proceedings of the meeting were all recorded, L.K. Tripathy, Chief Secretary of that State, told The Hindu on Monday.
In Bangalore, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to intervene in the Hogenakkal issue and stop Tamil Nadu from taking up any construction work at Hogenakkal. Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha activists, led by its president and former MLA Vatal Nagaraj, staged a black flag demonstration in front of the Vidhana Soudha.
