10 Interceptors to be procured under B-TRAC 2010 project Traffic violations will be videographed using cameras fitted to the vehicles BANGALORE: The Bangalore traffic police have strengthened their fleet by acquiring two state-of-the art Interceptor enforcement vehicles. The two Interceptor vehicles, fitted with technically advanced gadgets such as speed laser guns and video cameras, have been deployed in the East and West traffic divisions. Commissioner of Police Neelam Achutha Rao, in a press release on Monday, said the two vehicles would be used for traffic monitoring and enforcement on main roads, junctions and outer ring roads. Various traffic violations such as over-speeding, riding without helmet and using mobile phone while driving/riding would be videographed using cameras fitted to the Interceptors. The pictures taken by Interceptor vehicles are of evidential value in the court of law, the release said. In the days to come, more Interceptors would be acquired and put to use in residential areas also, Mr. Rao said. Interceptors, developed by the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE), are being used in many cities across the country for better enforcement of traffic rules and creating traffic awareness among the public. According to Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Praveen Sood, the Bangalore police would procure 10 Interceptors costing Rs. 21 lakh each under the B-TRAC 2010 project. According to IRTE, the contemporary Interceptor is tailored to Indian conditions, requirements and budgets. The Interceptor, which is a system and not merely a set of equipment, would comprise video camera, video recorder, video monitors, vehicle speed monitoring and documentation system, breath alcohol analyser and pollution analyser. The Interceptor has been visualised and developed keeping multiple objectives in mind: mainly evidence-based traffic law enforcement, enforcement on a mobile platform and traffic education. Mr. Sood said five of the 10 Interceptors they would be procuring would be upgraded and used as CrashLabs. In addition to the Interceptor facilities, the CrashLab jeep will have GPS and tools for accident scene investigation, including PC Crash and ViaNet software packages for processing collision data and reconstructing crashes. The CrashLab crew would comprise a cameraman, a police officer and the jeep driver.
