Work of Western scholars for Kannada hailed

Significant work: The portraits of nine Western scholars who contributed to the Kannada language were unveiled at a function organised by the Karnataka Sahitya Academy in Bangalore on Monday. Fourteen books were also released on the occasion.

BANGALORE: Chairman of the Kannada Book Authority S.G. Siddaramaiah has said that it was some Western scholars such as Ferdinand Kittel and B.L. Rice who provided a new perspective to the study of Kannada language.

He was speaking at the release of 14 books and unveiling the portraits of nine Western scholars who contributed to the development of Kannada, organised by the Karnataka Sahitya Academy here on Monday.

Prof. Siddaramaiah said that these Western scholars took pains to learn Kannada and traced its cultural roots and facilitated its study with a new perspective.

Their observations on the language laid the ground for further studies on it.

Kittel’s dictionary stood testimony to the significant contribution of such scholars, he added.

‘Redefine objectives’

Stating that academies and authorities should redefine their objectives, he pointed out that their programmes should focus on literacy and educating the rural masses.

Prof. Siddaramaiah cited the objectives of the experiments conducted by the KBA in facilitating the study of “desi” agriculture and nomadic communities and publishing reports.

Registrar of the academy V.N. Mallikarjuna Swamy said the academy would bring out a volume containing the works of 25 western scholars, who contributed to Kannada language.

M. Dhruvanarayana spoke on the works that were released. Academy chairperson Gita Nagabhushan presided over the function.
