Evolve steps to combat terror, says PM
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday called upon the international community to devise measures to combat terrorism as it posed a threat to freedom and democracy everywhere, even as he reiterated his government’s commitment to deal with such threats to peace and security.
He was speaking at a function organised to mark the Raising Day of the Special Protection Group . He said the number of dignitaries at risk from terrorist threats had increased and it was a source of great concern for governments. Dr. Singh said he was determined to root out terrorism and ensure that in a democracy political change could only come through the ballot box and not through the barrel of the gun.
While urging the SPG to evolve their procedures and practises of handling the public, he said he was conscious that a lot was being done to minimise the inconveniences faced by ordinary citizens.
“I am sure that a lot more can be done to further professionalise and improve matters. Innovative lateral thinking, along with an independent approach, is perhaps the way ahead.”
