Security reviewed
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta on Monday reviewed the security for the Olympic torch when it arrives here on April 17.
The meeting, attended by Delhi Police Commissioner Y.S. Dadhwal and officials of the Indian Olympic Association and the Delhi government, assessed the threat perception and discussed ways to ensure the safety of the torch.
The torch arrived in Beijing on Monday.
China is apprehensive that Tibetans could disrupt the relay of the torch here and had even warned that the India-leg could be skipped if foolproof security is not provided.
Beijing’s anxiety comes in the wake of the storming of the Chinese embassy here by Tibetan protesters on March 21despite high security.
National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan had said proper arrangements would be made to ensure the safe passage of the torch through India.
While the Delhi Police is responsible for the security of the torch, the Delhi government will organise several cultural functions when the flame arrives here. The Indian Olympic Association is responsible for the overall arrangements.
