Speaker quits, Minister sacked

Prafulla Das

Maheswar Mohanty

BHUBANESWAR: Speaker of the Orissa Assembly Maheswar Mohanty on Monday resigned from his post following sexual harassment charges against him, even as Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik dropped one of his Ministers for his alleged involvement in the controversy.

The Opposition had been demanding Mr. Mohanty’s resignation since the suspended Assistant Marshal, Gayatri Panda, levelled sexual harassment charges against him. It also wanted a probe by an independent agency.

Mr. Patnaik wrote to Governor M. C. Bhandare seeking the removal of Information and Public Relations Minister Debasis Nayak in the wake of allegations that he was involved in the controversy. Mr. Bhandare accepted the recommendation.
