A unique birthday

KOCHI: It was a unique birthday celebration on Tuesday for the 33 lakh people of Ernakulam district for it was on this day fifty years ago that their district was created.

The conference hall of the district collectorate decorated with festoons and balloons exuded an exciting mood as the district administration celebrated the golden jubilee of the district.

Presiding over the function, District Collector A. P. M. Mohammed Hanish cut a cake to commemorate the event.

Ernakulam district was formed at a function held at Rajendra Maidan on April 1, 1958.

As Mr. Hanish described it, the district, especially Kochi, had become a ‘crystal bowl of civilizations,’ embracing people of varied nationality, caste, creed and culture to its fold.

He drew attention to a couple of polling booths in Mattancherry, which he said, captured the nation’s imagination during elections for having voters of 13 linguistic communities voting there.

It was not for nothing that the renowned writer Dominique Lapierre had during a recent visit to Kochi said that if ever he wrote a book about the city it would be titled, “The City of Harmony.”

Heads of various departments expressed their views on the future development of the district.

Employees of the collectorate sung a song. R. Ramadevi, Deputy Collector (Land Acquisition), welcomed the gathering.
