A treat of European cinema

An exclusive collection of contemporary European films will be screened in the Capital as part of the 13th European Union Film Festival.

The festival that opened at India Habitat Centre on Tuesday continues in Delhi till April 8 and will then move to other Indian cities such as Chennai, Kolkata , Kozhikode and Pune.

Cultural exchange

Through the medium of cinema, the European Union aims to emphasise the importance of culture, particularly in the light of 2008 being the “European Year of Intercultural Dialogue”. The EU’s multifaceted relations with India encompass a dialogue between modern nation States built upon ancient civilisations, enriched with myriad cultures, religions, ethnicities and languages.

Showcase diversity

This edition of the festival will showcase the diversity in contemporary European cinema through an array of films, each one of which represents a different member State. The movies include national and international hits, gripping thrillers, innovative comedies and poignant modern-day dramas. A part of the EU-India strategic partnership, the festival packages 21 films from 20 EU countries with most films widely acclaimed in Europe and the recipients of prestigious awards.

Films to be screened

The screened films will include “Short Circuits” (Slovenia), “I Am” (Poland), “Kids in da Hood” (Sweden), “FC Venus” (Finland), “Waiter” (the Netherlands), “On the Other Side of the Bridge” (Austria), “Yella” (Germany), “After the Wedding” (Denmark) and “Its Spring in Prague Every Year” (Czech Republic).

The festival is being staged with support of the Delhi Government, India Habitat Centre and Alliance Française de Delhi.
