Survey ordered at Kadinamkulam

Staff Reporter

KADINAMKULAM: District Collector Sanjay Kaul has asked Revenue officials to survey the stretch of the Parvathy Puthanar river at Kadinamkulam where large-scale illegal sand-mining is alleged to have taken place under the cover of a government programme to make the canal navigable.

He announced the survey on Tuesday afternoon after inspecting the stretch of the canal where the sand-mining is said to have taken place. “Prima facie it is difficult to say how much sand has been taken away. On March 28 we ordered the stoppage of all sand-mining related activities here,” he told media persons.

Some amount of sand removal was required to widen the canal as per official requirements.

Officials of the Inland Waterways Department were required to widen the canal anywhere between 13.5 metres to 30 metres. However, effective action would be taken to prevent illegal sand-mining, he said. Assistant Executive Engineer of the Inland Waterways Department Girish told the Collector that retaining walls would be built along all stretches of the canal from where sand was removed and that taking away the sand would not endanger the houses by the side of the canal.

Mr. Kaul later told The Hindu that he would be briefing the Chief Minister’s office about his visit to Kadinamkulam.
