Assembly adjourned for lack of quorum

Staff Reporter

Ruling party, Opposition blame each other

“Ensuring quorum was the responsibility of the ruling party”

“The Opposition itself had raised the issue of water problems”

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Assembly on Tuesday was adjourned even before the proceedings began because of lack of quorum. Following the adjournment, both the ruling party and the Opposition blamed each other for the fiasco.

When the session began at 2 p.m., the Opposition members did not report to the House, while there were not enough ruling party members to complete the quorum. Ten minutes later, the Assembly Secretary adjourned the House for another ten minutes. However, the House still lacked the quorum.

Assembly Speaker Chaudhury Prem Singh then summoned the Chief Whips of both the parties. However, the deadlock could not be resolved and the Opposition members continued to stay away from the proceedings. With the number of ruling party members only 22, the House was finally adjourned for the day.

Later talking to media persons, the Leader of the Opposition Jagdish Mukhi said ensuring quorum in the House was the responsibility of the ruling party and alleged that it was they who failed to run the House. He added that the Congress had thrown them out from the Assembly for three days and, therefore, there was little reason why the BJP should cooperate.

On the other hand, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the Opposition members should have cooperated. She added that the Opposition itself had raised the issue of water problems but by not participating in the proceedings of the House, they showed that they were not interested. As per schedule for the day, the Chief Minister was to answer questions, mostly pertaining to water crises in the Capital, during Question Hour.
