TDP chief denies SP-Congress tie-up

‘Implement M.S.Swaminathan Commission report’

‘Government cancelled several projects in Kuppam’

HYDERABAD: United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA) convenor and Telugu Desam president N.Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday made light of reports that Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh was likely to join hands with the Congress in Uttar Pradesh.

Asked about such a possibility, he told a press conference here that the Congress was imagining things. Mr. Singh had already denied it, he pointed out.

Mr.Naidu said the measures announced by the Centre to contain inflation would not bring down prices, but to the contrary would fuel a hike. The steps would lead to fall in foodgrain output and there was a danger of India facing a threat to its food security. As an alternative, he wanted the Government to implement the M.S.Swaminathan Commission report, provide food subsidy and ensure remunerative prices to farmers.

‘No objection to probe’

He claimed that the Government had come out with measures only after the UNPA and Left parties announced agitation plans against price rise.

On the Government’s decision to move a resolution seeking a judicial inquiry into the assets of all 294 MLAs of the present House and of former Ministers since 1978, he said the Telugu Desam was not opposed to it. “We have no objection even if it is since the formation of the State,” he added. He, however, wanted the inquiry to be completed before the next Assembly elections.

Mr.Naidu alleged that several projects sanctioned by him in his native Kuppam Assembly constituency were cancelled by the Congress Government.

He said the allotment of 125 acres to Dabur Industries and 200 acres to Jain company for a sericulture project was cancelled.

Similarly, 989 teacher posts and Rs.10-crore sprinkler irrigation scheme were also among those cancelled.
