dated April 2, 1958: Political drama in E. Pak

Mr. Fazlul Huq, Governor of East Pakistan, on March 31 dismissed the Awami League coalition Ministry in East Pakistan and within hours of this decision, Mr. Huq himself was removed from his office by President Iskandar Mirza. An official announcement in Karachi said that Mr. Hamid Ali, Chief Secretary to the East Pakistan Government, had been asked to take over from Mr. Fazlul Huq. This melodrama of dismissal and new appointment, all happened in just about two hours time. Mr. Ataur Rahman Khan, Leader of the Awami League-Congress Coalition in East Pakistan, was sacked from the Chief Ministership since he refused to vacate his office at the Governor’s behest.
