Letters to the Editor
The injudicious and confrontational statement of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi that the Hogenakkal drinking water scheme would be implemented at any cost has triggered violence in Bangalore causing anxious moments to lakhs of Tamils living in the city. It is indeed the responsibility of a Chief Minister to meet the needs of his people. But a vainglorious approach will do little good to resolve an issue. The DMK leader who has enormous clout in the UPA government at the Centre should have exercised his influence to settle the matter amicably with the Karnataka government. Swetha R. Deepak, Chennai Mr. Karunanidhi need not have said what he said, especially at a time when Karnataka is set to go to the polls. All political parties are bound to make an issue of his remark. It has created unnecessary tensions between the two States. He could have waited to negotiate with the newly elected government. C. Lakshmi Narain, Chennai Karnataka has always been a soft target when such projects are undertaken. The Centre which has denied Karnataka the Kalasa Banduri Nala project on technical grounds should halt the Hogenakkal project. Elected representatives of both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka must take the matter seriously. While Karnataka groups must restrain from indulging in violence, which may defame the culture of Kannadigas, Mr. Karunanidhi should also refrain from testing their patience. Inamdar Ramachandra, Bangalore
