CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has emerged as the fastest growing market for Maruti Suzuki India. Sales, at 50,589 units, have grown by 33 per cent in 2007-08 over the previous year. At least three models have reported a sales growth in the region of 30 per cent. Alto has grown by 33 per cent (12,550 units), Swift by 30 per cent (7,370 vehicles) and Omni by 30 per cent (11,625 units). According to a company spokesman, “the impressive growth is the result of a combination of growing prosperity in Tamil Nadu and company-specific initiatives.” Seven per cent of the company’s sales of 7.65 lakh units in 2007-08 came from Tamil Nadu, he said. The overall sales went up by 13.3 per cent in 2007-08. Maruti has 29 showrooms in Tamil Nadu. A spokesman of Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL) said the company sold 16,980 passenger cars in Tamil Nadu in calendar 2007. This constituted 8.4 per cent of the company’s sales in 2007, he added. In the first two months of 2008, HMIL sold 3,218 units in Tamil Nadu. In March, the overall sales of HMIL stood at 47,001 units (including export of 17,600 units). With Tamil Nadu proving to be a hot market, the two leading car makers are engaged in a relentless battle to win the market share in the region.
