13 young archers on a mission

They will take part in a selection tournament to be held in Kolkata


12 boys and 12 girls in junior and sub-junior segments will be selected for intensive training

VIJAYAWADA: Young archers of Krishna district are on a mission to cover themselves with glory after competing with the best in the field.

As many as 13 archers, representing Andhra Pradesh in sub-junior and junior segments, will take part in a selection tournament.

Aspirants

This event is scheduled to be held at Salt Lake Stadium at Kolkata from April 2 to 5, anwill test the mettle of the young aspirants who are aiming high to make a name for themselves.

The tournament itself assumes significance because the Indian teams for some of the forthcoming major international fixtures will be selected under the watchful eyes of seasoned coaches and administrators.

“Under the new scheme introduced by the Sports Authority of India and the Archery Association of India, 12 boys and an equal number of girls in both junior and sub-junior segments will be selected for intensive training.

“The selected archers will form core archers to represent India,” said Ch. Satyanarayana, president of the Krishna District Archery Association (KDAA), on Monday.

The selected archers will don the Indian colours in the World Championship to be held this year and also in the New Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010.

“All necessary exposure trips and special training will be given to them.

“This is a golden opportunity for these youngsters to reach new heights in their chosen sport,” said KDAA secretary S. Adinarayana.

Hopes

KDAA officials are pinning their hopes on 14-year-old up and coming Ch. Jignas.

He was the one who finished fourth in the recently concluded Senior South Asian Championship, representing India ‘B’ team.

Keen on exhibiting their prowess along with Ch. Jignas are Ch. Yogita, K. Anila Rani, Deepu, Sunendu Rai, Jyothi Rekha, M. Haritha, Viswanath, Bhargava Krishna, Sahit, Anisha Reddy, Ch. Raja and P. Sai Akhil.

Siva Kumar and Rohit would be joining the team from AP Sports School, Hyderabad and they are keen to do well.

Mr. Satyanarayana felt that at least eight archers from Andhra Pradesh would get selected in the all-important tournament.

“Our main rivals are from Jharkhand and Tata Archery Academy,” he observed.
