100 call centre employees affected by food poisoning

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Over 100 employees of a call centre were taken ill after having lunch in their office at Janakpuri here on Wednesday. Victims of suspected food poisoning, all of them were said to be out of danger.

According to the police, the Om Innovative Call Services employees had their lunch around 1-30 p.m. An hour later panic set in when they began complaining of uneasiness, nausea and several of them threw up. All were rushed to the Emergency Ward of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital. About 46 of them were admitted to the hospital after a preliminary medical check-up. Some others were taken to another hospital.

On Wednesday evening, the hospital authorities said all the employees were out of danger. “We had to do gastric wash on four of them,” said a doctor.

Case registered

Most of the call centre employees were either discharged or left the hospital on their own against medical advice after their conditions improved by evening.

The Janakpuri police have registered a case against the caterer who supplied food to the call centre for sale of adulterated food. Investigations by the police revealed that the food -- “roti and aloo-mattar” -- had been supplied by Sitaram Food Corner located in the area. Its owner, Sitaram, has been detained for questioning.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Sharad Aggarwal said: “We have recorded the statements of the victims and would take further action on the basis of the findings. Samples of the food are being sent to a laboratory for chemical examination.”

The call centre, which deals in banking services, is owned by Sonu Aggarwal, the police said.
