Hosur: Tension prevailed at Athipalli junction, near Tamil Nadu border, on Wednesday when Kannada Jakridhi Vedike activists took out a procession and burnt Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in effigy.

The activists raised slogans against the Pattali Makkal Katchi founder Dr. S. Ramadoss for his alleged derogatory remarks against Kannadigas. The agitators also cautioned the PMK to refrain taking claim for Kolar Gold Fields, Chamrajpet and Bangalore.

In the event of the PMK continuing with the claims, the agitators said they would counter the same by staking claim to Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts. The Kannada Jakridhi Vedike criticised the Tamil Nadu Government for not bringing the Hogenakkal project to the notice of the Karnataka Government when Cauvery water dispute was pending before the Supreme Court.

They cautioned the State Government to drop the drinking water project and stop all development works in the area. The agitators threatened to paralySe the inter-state traffic if the Tamil Nadu Government went ahead with the project.

Areas inside the Tamil Nadu border remained by and large peaceful. Sources said that they were closely monitoring situation across the border. Additional police forces have been deployed along interstate border to pre-empt any untoward incident.
