BHUBANESWAR: Opposing the Andhra Pradesh government’s efforts to construct an irrigation project over Mahendratanaya, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday announced that his government would construct a barrage on the river by arranging funds from its own resources. Mr. Patnaik also wrote a letter to his Andhra Pradesh counterpart Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy urging him to stop work on the irrigation project over Mahendratanaya. Orissa had not received any information from the Andhra Pradesh Government or the Central Water Commission if the irrigation project had been given the clearance from the Water Commission, Mr. Patnaik said in his letter. Stating that the irrigation project of the neighbouring State would affect the course of the river, Mr. Patnaik said that it would also create crisis with regard to drinking water and lift irrigation in Paralakhemundi and its neighbouring areas.
