Give back: Advocates being arrested in front of the Pudukottai railway station on Wednesday for staging a demonstration. PUDUKOTTAI: Demanding restoration of the Pudukottai Parliamentary Constituency, the Pudukottai Parliamentary Constituency Retrieval Committee has called for a ‘bandh’ in the district on April 26 to display the people’s anguish against the recommendation of Delimitation Commission. A meeting of the committee held here on Tuesday resolved to embark on a three-phase agitation which will culminate in the ‘bandh’ in the district on April 26. In the first phase, the committee members will observe fast at all the six Assembly segments on April 8 wearing black badges. Black flags will be hoisted in all commercial establishments on that day, it said. The second phase of the agitation would be organised on April 15, when the committee members will take out processions at all major centres in the district. The president of the committee, R. Xavier, said that traders, members of various voluntary organisations, representatives of working classes and other sections of the society participated in the meeting. On Wednesday, members of the Pudukottai Bar Association, who attempted to stage rail roko agitation at Pudukottai station in support of the demand, were arrested. Led by the secretary of the association, G. Ramalingam, they marched to the railway station, where a large number of police personnel, headed by the Additional Superintendent of Police (Prohibition) Pe. Vilvaranimurugan and the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Alangudi Mahendran, prevented them from entering the station. The advocates raised slogans urging the President, the Prime Minister, and the Chief Election Commissioner to restore Pudukottai parliamentary constituency, given its historical background. The vice-president of the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Advocates Federation A. Chandrasekaran was among those who took part. The agitating lawyers threatened that the entire electorate of the district would boycott the future elections if the demand was not conceded. Those arrested were later released.
