Puducherry
PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N.Rangasamy on Wednesday announced that the government would provide Rs. 1,130 per tonne as interim price for sugarcane for the crushing period. Replying to questions raised by members on the issue, he said the government would offer the price as provided last year. However, the tripartite committee would meet within a month to fix the final procurement price. He also sought the cooperation of the members for the government’s efforts to establish a distilleries unit in the cooperative sector. This would help the cooperative sugar mill at Lingareddipalayam to make over its losses and disburse the arrears to the cane growers. On the demands raised by the workers of Anglo-French Textile Mills, the Chief Minister said the current struggle had not been launched by the trade unions. However, the government was prepared to hold talks with the workers’ representatives on providing interim relief before finalising the issues related to the removal of anomalies in dearness allowance. The government would also take steps to solve the drinking water problem in the Union Territory, he said, adding that a proposal had been sent to the Centre for the implementation of projects worth Rs.300 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission to end drinking water crisis in Puducherry and Karaikal regions. During the Zero Hour, responding to the plea made by CPI member R.Viswanathan, Speaker R. Radhakrishnan said instructions had been sent to the Ministers against postponement of replying to questions or converting the starred questions into unstarred questions. Minister for Agriculture V.Vaithilingam said that as per the official estimate, crops raised on 2,185 ha in Puducherry and 5,577 ha in Karaikal had been damaged owing to incessant rain during the third week of last month. The government had requested Tamil Nadu to provide details with regard to compensation provided for the damage of crops other than paddy. After getting the details, the government would announce the relief package to the affected farmers, he added.
