NEW DELHI: A group of senior residents, post-graduate medical students and research scholars at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here have complained to the Institute’s administration about the shortage of hostel accommodation. “At present we face a shortfall of 500 rooms and have been talking to the Institute administration about the problem for the past three years. The problem has become worse after one of the hostels, was declared unfit by the engineering department a year ago. We were then promised new accommodation within the next three months, but we are still waiting. Also, the house rent allowance provided to resident doctors does not allow them to stay close to the Institute,” said Kumar Harsh, president of Resident Doctors Association of AIIMS. Forced to stay far way and work in shifts, doctors claim that the problems due to lack of proper accommodation has become acute now, especially so for women staff. “We were told that the proposal for new hostels had been approved by the Institute three years ago and it was placed in many of the governing body and institute body meetings but nothing has been done so far. Worst is the plight of the women residents who come from far off places and are forced to stay outside the Institute campus for more than a year waiting for a hostel room,” he added. At present around 500 resident doctors and research scholars are waiting to get a room in the Institute hostel .
