AIYF blocks train

Staff Reporter

In protest against slashing of State’s ration quota

Ire on track: AIYF activists block the New Delhi-bound Kerala Express in Kollam on Wednesday.

KOLLAM: The district unit of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) organised a rail roko at the Kollam railway station on Wednesday morning as part of a State-wide exercise.

The demonstrators blocked the New Delhi-bound Kerala Express. The train was held up for more than thirty minutes because of the block.

Inaugurating the protest, State vice-president of the AIYF Sam K. Daniel said that the United Progressive Alliance government was trying to sabotage the existing statutory rationing system. The Centre slashing Kerala’s ration quota was becoming a regular feature under UPA rule, he pointed out.

Mr. Daniel said that 87 per cent of the ration quota for the State had been cut. In the latest slashing of quota, 21,334 tonnes from the required 1,30,564 tonnes was cut.

This was injustice towards the State. It was to protest against this injustice that the AIYF organised the rail roko, he said. AIYF district president Udayakumar also addressed. The demonstrators peacefully dispersed after that.
