Girl dies after injection

Staff Correspondent

Parents, relatives stage protest outside nursing home

DAVANGERE: A seven-year-old girl, Archana, died after she was administered an injection by a nurse at a private nursing home on Akkamahadevi Road here. Her parents and relatives staged a dharna in front of the nursing home alleging negligence on part of the hospital authorities.

Tension prevailed near the nursing home when the relatives of the girl threw stones at its window panes. They became restive when doctors did not turn up to answer their queries. The police rushed to the spot and resorted to a mild lathi-charge.

Background

Archana had tonsillitis and her parents wanted to get it removed surgically after her examinations. She was brought to the nursing home on Sunday, and after she was admitted, a nurse administered an injection. Minutes after being given the shot, Archana fell unconscious. Doctors advised the parents to take her to a bigger hospital for treatment. While she was being taken to another hospital, she died. Archana was buried on Tuesday and on Wednesday her parents and relatives had approached the nursing home to inquire into the nature of the injection administered. But the doctors and staff had left the hospital sensing trouble. Archana’s father, Jagadish, works with S.S. Mallikarjun, the former Minister and Congress leader. The police said that had they been informed of the matter the previous day, a post-mortem could have been performed. Archana’s parents had already buried her body. Permission is being sought to exhume the body and conduct the post-mortem. But her parents have opposed the move.
