SEZ status sought for Smart City land

KOCHI: The promoters of Smart City, Kochi, has submitted an application to the Union government seeking Special Economic Zone (SEZ) status for the 100 acres acquired from the Kerala State Electricity Board, it is learnt.

The meeting of the Board of Approval for SEZ of the Union government held on March 20 had granted SEZ status to 136 acres of Smart City.

The meeting had directed the promoters to make a fresh application for the remaining 100 acres of land.

The board took the decision on the ground that the entire 236 acres could not be treated as a single plot, as the 100 acres were separated from the rest of the land by a water body.

Meanwhile, the lease agreement for 11.5 acres, which was left out of the 234.5 acres handed over to the company on November 15 last year on account of the existence of inhabitants, is expected to be signed next week when the officials of Smart City arrives here for the company’s second board meeting. The meeting of the board is scheduled for April 9.
