KOCHI: The Coir Board will conduct a study of the state of affairs in the small-scale coir products manufacturing sector in the traditional coir areas of Cherthala and Ambalapuzha in Alappuzha district. The study will be entrusted to an experienced agency and will be completed in 45 days, said a press release from Coir Board here recently. The study will include the existing functioning of the units, fund flow requirements, marketing linkages, workers’ welfare and working environment. The small-scale product manufacturing sector is the backbone of the traditional coir sector of the Kerala. Old machinery, poor working environment, lack of orders, primary fund flow and realisation of fair prices are some of the major problems faced by the traditional units. Paucity of work has forced traditional coir workers to migrate to other sectors. ModernisationThe Coir Board has introduced a scheme for the rejuvenation, modernisation and technology upgradation in the sector with a total plan outlay of Rs.243 crore. The scheme envisages rejuvenating the existing units engaged in the production of intermediaries for value-added export by extending 40 per cent government grant on the total unit outlay of Rs.5 lakh provided by the financial institutions. The Board has taken the initiative by providing grant to 190 spinning units and 160 tiny/household units in the State for the year 2007-08 with a total outlay of Rs.11.8 crore. The scheme is to provide assistance for upgrading the infrastructure facilities of these units.
